I grew up in New Jersey and went to Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. My internship was at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, and I completed my ophthalmology residency at the University of Colorado in Denver. My fellowship in glaucoma was at Tufts Medical Center, and I undertook a second fellowship in global ophthalmology at the University of Utah.
I love seeing my patients able to enjoy their hobbies again with the vision they regain after cataract surgery, and I get great satisfaction from the long-term relationships I form with my glaucoma patients and their families. My passion within medicine is delivering care to underserved populations, and I was privileged to spend a year of my training working with the global outreach division of the Moran Eye Center performing cataract and glaucoma surgeries and training local ophthalmologist partners in Nepal, Haiti, India, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, and Micronesia.
In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors with my dog Atlas, reading, going to live music shows, visiting friends in other cities and countries, and rock climbing at the gym. I am always looking for good food or drink recommendation!
"I’ve always had issues with my eyesight, and they’ve become more serious as I’ve aged. It’s very important to me that I have the utmost confidence in the doctor who oversees my eye care. Dr. Avni Shah of the Eye Care Institute inspires that confidence. In addition to her significant medical expertise and intelligence, she truly cares about her patients’ well-being, and will think outside the box to deliver the best possible outcome. I wouldn’t consider any medical facility other than Eye Care Institute to safeguard my vision." - Bob C.
"It was my first time at the Eye Care Institute and Dr. Shah far exceeded my expectations. Her thorough examination by both Dr. Shah and her assistant was exemplary. I highly recommend Dr. Shah and the Eye Care Institute!" - Brad W.
