How do contact lenses work?

There are several reasons why patients may approach the doctors at the Eye Care Institute about the possibility of switching from prescription eyeglasses to contact lenses. Some patients do so for hassle-free vision correction, eliminating the need for unsightly eyewear that might get in the way of a patient’s current lifestyle. For some, they may want a glasses-free appearance, especially during special events where they want to look their best. Regardless of the reason, patients love contact lenses as a reliable vision correction option when compared to wearing prescription eyewear.

How do contact lenses work?

Contact lenses are used to help correct vision concerns that can impact one’s visual acuity. These lenses are designed to help a patient maintain ocular health while correcting refractive errors. They ar small, thin, and are placed on the eye. They float above the tear film layer that rests over the surface of the cornea and provides improved acuity. The contact lens itself moves with the eyes, ensuring correct vision no matter where you look within your field of vision.

What types of contact lenses are available?

There are a variety of contact lens types that are available at the Eye Care Institute for patients to consider, and these include:

  • Soft lenses
  • Multifocal lenses
  • Color contact lenses
  • Silicone hydrogels
  • Gas-Permeable (GP) lenses

Which one is right for me?

During an eye examination, the doctors of the Eye Care Institute will provide a comprehensive evaluation to first determine the patient’s current prescription and look for signs of issues within the eyes. If a patient is a proper candidate, the type of contact lens is then discussed further. Contact lenses are not always available at the office and may need to be ordered, especially certain specialized lenses such as gas-permeable lenses, toric lenses, and multifocal lenses.
